WELCOME TO THE SWAMP!
In early March 2024 The Jewel and the Jeweller invited artist Katie Pascoe to write a curatorial brief for a group show SWAMP WITCH, 35 makers from across the motu have responded with over 80 works, including jewelry, painting, print, poetry, ceramics, bone sculpture and bronze.
A fragment of a song, a brooch, a conversation, a walk in the woods. The genesis of the show came about from a mixture of things. At The Jewel and The Jeweller Art Residency last year, Jen and I had a conversation about Swamp Witch - somewhere between that song and her brooch, the idea of an exhibition was born but nebulous in its forming.
I have been dwelling on swamps as vessels of creativity for a while now. Seeing them as generous, understanding and accepting places that naturally allow and absorb many actions that follow the circular pathways of creative ideas. A place where a foment of ideas can happen. Swamps break things down but they can also build things up. They sustain the many naturally hold multiplicities within them. I am very attracted to these notions and how they fit into ideas of creative and artistic pursuits flourishing. ~Katie Pascoe
